The Kalsa district, built during the Arab domination, was the fortified citadel where the emir and his ministers resided and still retains its name (al halisah, the elect, the pure). Even today, a particular oriental atmosphere still hovers there, accentuated by the presence of monuments in the Arab-Norman style.
